why are we so materialistic?

Our societies recently have experienced unparalleled advances in science and technology. Throughout the course of humankind, we have never achieved this advancement we see in our society. However, the byproduct of this advancement is that we have been more materialistic. One of the spiritual diseases in our societies is the materialism. God informs in the Quran about being materialistic. In Chapter 3 verse 92 He says,

Never will you attain the good [reward] until you spend [in the way of Allah ] from that which you love. And whatever you spend – indeed, Allah is Knowing of it.”

When we examine our societies we see that we are taught to spend. Whenever a new gadget or upgrade is released to our societies, we must have it.  Our youth concerns themselves more with money and products. If we ask any young person what their goal is, majority of the youth would say having wealth. Materialism is very appealing in our societies, but why is it this way?

The reason why materialism is so appealing is because it fills a void within us. We have voids within ourselves and materialism temporarily helps fill that void. Many people have everything they could want, but are still not happy. It is because that void can never be filled with materialism. The problem with materialism is that it never leaves us satisfied. The more we indulge ourselves with materialism, the less we are satisfied.

Furthermore, materialism is appealing is because our brain reacts in a particular fashion. Within our brains we have a structure called the nucleus accumbens. This structure is also known as the pleasure center. When we see something that we like our brain drugs us. It floods our brain with dopamine, which makes us happy. This is why with just thinking of what we want to buy it excites us. We feel a sense of accomplishment or happiness before we even purchase it because of the dopamine release.
